THE HAMPTON ROADS COMPACT

Growing regional cooperation and citizenship starts with a spirit of good will among the various partners, in this case the 17 localities that make up Hampton Roads, America’s First Region.  It continues with frank discussions among the participants about how to proceed that are guided by a set of principles.  In 2007, The Hampton Roads Partnership hopes to construct such a document by bringing together representatives of the cities, counties and towns in southeastern Virginia. It will be called the Hampton Roads Compact and will act as our region’s unofficial Declaration of Interdependence.

In this space, we will report on the progress of those discussions that are tentatively set to take place during a pair of summits in January and February in collaboration with WHRO’s Center for Regional Studies. To provide input, call the Partnership at 757-625-4696.
